Project Overview

We kicked off by overhauling the network closets, tearing out disorganized, undocumented cabling and rebuilding patch panels for a clean, maintainable foundation. From there, we handled the following:

Wi-Fi 6 Upgrade & AP Deployment: Replaced legacy Wi-Fi 2 with Wi-Fi 6, installing both indoor and ruggedized outdoor access points to achieve full coverage inside the buildings and across the site, ensuring technicians had reliable connectivity while working outside.

Switch & Backbone Enhancements: Deployed multiple PoE switches to power the access points and upgraded uplinks to 10 Gbps for future scalability.

Three Remote Points, Linked Without Digging: Parts of this site were a long way from the building. One of them was a pole in the parking lot that needed Wi-Fi and had no network anywhere near it. Getting fiber out there would have meant trenching across the property.

Instead we mounted a Ubiquiti LiteAP GPS base station on the building and linked three NanoBeam radios back to it, at roughly 3,000 feet, 2,700 feet, and 2,500 feet. The farthest of those is more than half a mile. Each link carries around 300 Mbps, line of sight was clear, and the whole thing went in without a shovel touching the ground.

Key Challenges

  • Closet Rebuild: Fully re-cabling the IDFs was essential to support the new access points and switches without risking downtime.

  • Physical Constraints: Routing additional CAT6 and power for both indoor and outdoor access points through existing tight conduits and low-clearance ceilings required careful planning and specialized tooling.

  • The Trenching Question: The obvious way to reach those remote points was to dig and pull fiber. At 3,000 feet that is not a line item, it is a construction project: excavation, restoration, and a timeline measured in weeks rather than days. A wireless bridge does the same job for a fraction of the cost, provided you have clear line of sight and you align the radios properly.

  • Alignment at Distance: At half a mile, a radio that is a couple of degrees off aims at nothing. Each NanoBeam had to be sighted and tuned individually against the base station.

  • Power & PoE Budgets: Balancing PoE loads across multiple switches to power the high-density access points while maintaining optimal backhaul capacity.

Results

  • Three Links, No Excavation: Remote points at 3,000, 2,700, and 2,500 feet were brought onto the network over wireless bridges, each carrying roughly 300 Mbps. No trenching, no permits, no site disruption.

  • Full Coverage: Achieved complete indoor coverage and extended reliable Wi-Fi outdoors, including the parking-lot pole, enabling uninterrupted connectivity for technicians and end users alike.

  • Performance Boost: Wireless throughput increased by over 400%, delivering consistent Gigabit-class speeds campus-wide.

  • Scalable Infrastructure: The new PoE switch fabric and 10 Gbps uplinks provide headroom for future growth, supporting additional access points and connected devices.

  • On-Time, On-Budget Delivery: Completed the full scope within the agreed project window.

  • 99% CSAT: The client awarded a 99% satisfaction rating, praising minimal downtime, clear communication, and professional execution.

The Takeaway

Two things are worth pulling out of this project. The first is that a clean network closet is not cosmetic. Undocumented cabling is what turns a ten-minute fault into a two-day hunt.

The second is that distance is not the obstacle most people assume it is. Business owners tend to look at a building on the far side of a property and conclude that connecting it means digging. Usually it does not. If you can see from one point to the other, you can almost always put a network link between them, and it will cost a great deal less than excavation.
